Lead India – Great initiative turned into a reality show

I was quite enthused with the idea of Lead India program. I have closely watched the program from its inception to recent coverage on Star One channel. The idea was great but the rating of execution heading downwards with every episode of this competition. Some of points revolving in my mind which I’m not agreed upon are:

1.
The first mistake was to have Javed Akhtar in the judge panel. He might be suitable for reality shows, but this platform requires utterly different knack of judgment. Here, you are not judging teenage guys; these all participants are command respect and reputation in the society. Javed Akhtar nowhere stands in front of them. Javed has been throwing harsh comments on participants and expressing his personal grudges. He skewed venom on a Gujarati participant Devang Nanavati in introductory episode and repeated the same incident with utter crudity in 3rd episode as well. He should understand that Lead India is not a stage for debate on Gujarat riots.
2. Mr. Birla was brought on stage as eminent personality to judge the prospective leaders. In my view his arrival can be attributed to sponsorship by Idea Cellular, but once somebody called, he should have been given the full chance to evaluate the contestants in his own fashion but he didn’t get that chance.
3.
The most demoralizing factor was inviting bollywood actors to promote their upcoming films like other reality shows do. There is no doubt that all actors are prominent personalities in their ethnicity but they are hugely irrelevant when it comes to evaluating potential leaders. If it were a reality show they would have been unarguably best to hold the judge’s chair.
4. Giving the emphasis on public voting, Lead India has turned into a revenue oriented reality show. It is evident from other reality shows that public voting hardly brings out the best as a winner because the Indian public is deeply divided on the basis of states, language, cast and creed which affect the results. The same factor can be made responsible for elimination of a strong candidate Ujjawal Banerji in the starting episode.
5. Last but not the least, total formatting of the program could have been better. The participants were evaluated on the basis of rubbish questions based on bollywood films and sports. Even the KBC had a better set of questions than this program.
